2005 Soccer Tournament Action Packed!

Image

Of the 4 originally registered teams, we unfortunately were not able to field 2 due to the Carnival reschedule. Therefore Tikur Abay and Walia Ibex were the two teams that duked it out for the final prize. The game was played at a high and exciting pace, action packed from beginning to end. The two teams were very evenly matched however and the outcome seesawed back and forth until just before the final whistle with the following result:

Tikur Abay 5 - Walia Ibex 5

Yes, you read right. These 2 teams scored 10 goals between them!! Talk about a proficient striker corps. We had 2 former Ethiopian National Team players - Gebru W/Ammanuel and Sebsibe Assefa as guests of honor at the tournament. We're also going to venture to say we may also have had some future Ethiopian National Team players if the game they put on display was anything to go by.

Tournament Teams!

We lost 2 of our originally registered teams due to the Carnival reschedule, but the remaining 2 were definite all-stars - maybe even some future members of the national team possibly. 5 goals apiece says they're probably going to be a proficient striker force for some pro team in the future.

Tikur Abay (Also known as the Blue Nile) - Originating in the Northwestern highlands of Ethiopia, Tikur Abay is also known as the mighty Blue Nile and contributes more than-80% of the water for the Nile, the longest river in the world.

Walia Ibex - Found only in Ethiopia on the Simien Plateau, this exotic species of goat live on impossibly steep sloping mountains and have horns that can grow up to 1 meter in length.

Dashen - Located in the Simien Mountain Range (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Ras Dashen is the highest mountain in Ethiopia (and fourth highest in Africa),

Adwa - if there is one word that immediately brings to mind the fiercely proud independent streak of Ethiopians, it is this one for being the name of the battle at which Emperor Menelik II defeated the invading Italian army in 1896. It was the first and remains to this day the only time that a European colonial army was decisively defeated by African forces.
